One of the newer additions and requested choice of the Hawaii locals called chicken mushroom manapua. Chinese immigrants in the 19th century brought char siu bao with them to work in the sugar cane and pineapple plantations in Hawaii. The term bao is Chinese for bun. Eventually, it evolved into the Hawaiian name manapua. The bun is made from a special dough and is filled with a chicken mushroom mix. It is fully cooked and is most flavorful when steaming prior to eating.
